Brookings - Harbor

Brookings was named after John E. Brookings, president of the Brookings Lumber and Box Company, which founded the city in 1908.
Due to its location, Brookings is subject to winter temperatures considered unseasonably warm for the Oregon Coast. This is due in part to the marine influences from its location on the Pacific Ocean, but mostly from its situation at the foot of the Klamath Mountains, whose winds compress and warm the air flowing onto Brookings. This is called the Brookings effect or Chetco effect.
For Brookings-Harbor events, festivals, live entertainment and happenings go to our Oregon Coast Calendar.

A post from The Redwood Empire blog

The mouth of the Chetco River at Brookings Harbor, where you can put in for kayaking or canoeing. I don't suggest going toward the mouth, unless it is a particularly flat day, you are aware of tides, you are a great swimmer, and you have a really warm wet suit. Otherwise, you might need the U.S. Coast Guard. (Photo by "Cacophony," Wikipedia, cc-sa 3.0.)

As the first winter storms and accompanying large swells roll across the South Coast, we urge residents and visitors to exercise caution when visiting local beaches.
Experts have predicted several high tides the rest of this month which, combined with high seas, is a good reason to hit local beaches and do some wave watching and beachcombing.

Chowder fans queued up for more than 45 minutes on Saturday to get a taste of this year’s clam chowder at the Oregon Coast Professional Chowder Cookoff.
This year six restaurants participated in the event, held during Chowder, Blues and Brews in Florence. For the first time in several years, the judges and the people voted for the same winner — Sporthaven Marina in Brookings.
The Waterfront Tavern in Reedsport finished second and Tavolo Restaurant at Sandpines Golf Club in Florence was third.

This certainly has been a summer to remember for me, and I would like to thank all the golf courses along the Southern Oregon Coast for having us out to play a round. Whether I played well, or not, I had a great time and would recommend any of the courses depending on the level of your game.
