Brookings - Harbor

Brookings was named after John E. Brookings, president of the Brookings Lumber and Box Company, which founded the city in 1908.
Due to its location, Brookings is subject to winter temperatures considered unseasonably warm for the Oregon Coast. This is due in part to the marine influences from its location on the Pacific Ocean, but mostly from its situation at the foot of the Klamath Mountains, whose winds compress and warm the air flowing onto Brookings. This is called the Brookings effect or Chetco effect.
For Brookings-Harbor events, festivals, live entertainment and happenings go to our Oregon Coast Calendar.

Buy fresh crab from the fishing boats at Brookings Harbor or head for a waterside meal at the Blue Water Cafe & Lounge.
This Brookings cafe is a favorite with local fishing families and visitors walking around the busy harbor.
The best of Oregon’s sustainable fishery is on the menu here, with bay shrimp and grilled fish from breakfast to dinner.
There’s fresh crab for breakfast: Crab Benedict (poached eggs, crab and hollandaise on an English muffin): $16.95.
Fresh crab for lunch: Grilled Dungeness crab & cheese: $15.95, with fries, homemade coleslaw or potato salad.
And fresh, grilled snapper for dinner: $17.95.
A seafood feast with prawns, snapper, oysters, scallops, cod, halibut and clam strips is $22.95.

Where but the Oregon coast could you watch an otter dig his own “hot tub” in the sand?
And where but the Oregon coast could you watch the otter while admiring osprey flying to redwood forests?
We’ve traveled this coast for more than 10 years, and have never seen anything like the hybrid otters that live here.
This one climbed out of the Winchuck River near the edge of the ocean and acted as if he was going to the spa. He created a little dip on the beach, then rolled and wriggled about, and tossed sand as if he was getting a salt scrub at the spa.
The Brookings otters are hybrids, with the long, lean body of a river otter, but the playful antics of sea otters. They swim in the Winchuck and the Pacific, one of the only otters known to inhabit both worlds.

A post from The Redwood Empire blog

The mouth of the Chetco River at Brookings Harbor, where you can put in for kayaking or canoeing. I don't suggest going toward the mouth, unless it is a particularly flat day, you are aware of tides, you are a great swimmer, and you have a really warm wet suit. Otherwise, you might need the U.S. Coast Guard. (Photo by "Cacophony," Wikipedia, cc-sa 3.0.)

As the first winter storms and accompanying large swells roll across the South Coast, we urge residents and visitors to exercise caution when visiting local beaches.
Experts have predicted several high tides the rest of this month which, combined with high seas, is a good reason to hit local beaches and do some wave watching and beachcombing.

This certainly has been a summer to remember for me, and I would like to thank all the golf courses along the Southern Oregon Coast for having us out to play a round. Whether I played well, or not, I had a great time and would recommend any of the courses depending on the level of your game.
