Mike Smith

MikeSmith2HaystackCome and explore the wonderful fanciful worlds created by artist Mike Smith. An influential artist both nationally and internationally, he began sculpting and drawing as a child. Mike received a degree in English Literature from the University of Portland , taught briefly, and then became committed to developing his art on a professional level. His early work was abstract, but Mike soon abandoned schools of art and developed his unique, colorful style which has subsequently influenced other artists. His work contains worldwide themes and ideas, but the focus and inspiration of his painting and sculpture remains the hill where he lives. In his thirty plus year career, he has had almost 100 solo exhibitions of his work which includes watercolor, oil, acrylic, bronze, ceramic, and printmaking.

Michael David Sorensen

MichaelDavidSorensenHaystackMichael started watercolor painting at age 13 and has enjoyed it ever since. Sorensen claims that he started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil in an effort to compete with his older brother, Dan, and his dad. His dad made a living for several years as a professional artist, blowing glass, so when it came time to home school Michael and Dan, their dad became the art teacher. After graduating from high school, Michael went on to Clark College . At Clark College , he took every art class he could fit into his schedule and met several instructors that pushed him in his artwork. Sorensen graduated from Clark College in spring of 2001 and still relies on his brother and dad for art instruction and an ever-ready honest critique of his artwork.

Michael Tieman

MichaelTiemanHaystack“The role of an artist from the dawn of time has been as a visual storyteller. The stories my art tell are ones of confidence, strength, passion, playful sophistication & the celebration of life.”

Michael attended the Columbus College of Art and Design and in 1972 received his BFA in advertising design. Taking his degree, Michael and his Canadian wife went to Vancouver B.C. Canada in 1973 where he started out on a successful thirty-five year plus international career in advertising design. In 1986 Michael relocated to Portland , Oregon with his family.

Tieman has sketched and painted since childhood and has spent almost four decades as a working artist, both as a graphic designer and a fine artist. “I create my bronze sculpture as a three dimensional painting; texture is the impasto brushstroke, color is the play of light and shadows across the surfaces, and detail is the free style movement of the impressionist style.”

Sally O'Neill

SallyONeillHaystackA Native of Southern California, Sally O'Neill has been interested in the arts since childhood. In 1998 she expanded her artistic horizons and decided to try painting in oils. This proved to be a life changing decision.

“As soon as I started working in oils I couldn't get enough. As an admirer of the impressionists I love the effects of light and color the medium allows. My attempt is to create a place more beautiful than perhaps it may actually be. I want my paintings to bring the viewer into a world they would love to be in. A world of beauty and sun drenched days.”

Although largely self-taught, Sally has studied privately with a number of instructors, including her constant mentor, watercolorist Don O'Neill.

Sally is a full time artist and devotes the majority of her time to painting. She has lived in Oregon since 1991 and maintains a studio, which she shares with husband Tim and their two dogs.
