|44rd Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival in Astoria Oregon|
|Oregon Coast Notes - News|
The Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival has been a tradition on the North Coast of Oregon for over forty years. All events except for the parade take place at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds, three miles east of Astoria.
Highlights on Friday include the Coronation of Miss Scandinavia, the torchlight procession to the bonfire to burn hexes representing bad luck, and the queen's ball. Saturday's events include a walking parade in downtown Astoria, the raising of the midsummer pole followed by ring dancing, and an evening open dance. On Sunday there is a nondenominational church service in the morning. The raffle and closing ceremonies take place in the late afternoon. Games and activities for children are available Saturday and Sunday in the kids' area called the Barnefest.
Scandinavian entertainers are scheduled for all three days of the midsummer festival and will perform on three different stages and in the beer garden. Many musical, dance, and theater groups are scheduled to entertain. Retail booths will offer handcrafts, Scandinavian import items, and traditional Scandinavian foods. Full Scandinavian-themed meals will be offered in the Exhibit Hall starting with Friday dinner and continuing through Sunday lunch. The Wet Dog Brewery will provide hand-crafted beers and a limited menu in the Beer Garden.
