Gold Beach
Gold Beach was originally named Ellensburg in the 1850s, but later took the name Gold Beach after a beach near the mouth of the Rogue River where hundreds of placer mines extracted gold.
The Rogue River mailboats based in Gold Beach have been delivering mail upstream to Agness since 1895 and are only one of only two rural mailboat routes remaining in the U.S.
Although Gold Beach had been a community since the middle of the 19th century, and the county seat since 1859, its current incorporation charter only dates to 1945.

It's barely spring but tiny wildflowers more delicate than porcelain are already blossoming.
On the southern path of the Cape Sebastian Trail in Gold Beach, you walk under an arched hedge of shore pine and then onto a trail with sharp switchbacks on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Waves some 900 feet below crash against massive boulders just offshore.

A large piece of Oregon's past will get a new home later this morning. Hamilton Construction is donating pieces of the Isaac Lee Patterson Bridge to BRING Recycling. The old pieces of bridge will be used as walls for BRING's new garden.
Four bridge railings weighing 35,000 pounds were salvaged during a restoration project that fixed several bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway, specifically the Gold Beach Bridge. BRING managers say this preservation of history fits into what they're all about recycling and re-using products.

Floras Lake is only one of several sweet locations to surf on the South Coast. The South Coast’s warm afternoon thermals, stiff north winds and enticing clear summer skies make it an ideal setting for wind sports, both on the ocean and on lakes.
Perhaps one of the best aspects of Oregon Coast windsurfing is that it also affords great gawking from the road. On a windy day the spectators at Pistol River can equal the number of surfers in the water. The South Coast is known as Oregon’s Banana Belt because of its uncharacteristically warm temps. Its strikingly beautiful scenery doesn’t hurt the eyes either. One can easily spend hours at the wayside vicariously surfing the waves while sipping on a Gold Beach latte. Summer can’t get any better than this. Read Portland Examiner Article
