| Valley of the Giants hidden deep in Oregon Coast Range |
| Lincoln City |
Some of Oregon's oldest and largest trees survived the logging of the Coast Range forests and live tucked away deep in a remote valley 15 miles east of Lincoln City. The 51-acre stand of trees is appropriately named the Valley of the Giants, a fun place to visit during the autumn color season. The big trees are the hook, but the catch comes in finding the valley. The federal Bureau of Land Management, which manages the valley, will mail a brochure that has several paragraphs to describe the driving directions. But don't look for directions on the BLM Web site. The valley has no developed facilities, other than a short trail down to the giants, so overuse is a constant concern. On the other hand, the BLM encourages those who want to make the effort to visit the valley to see first hand the magnificence of the remnant forest. Visitors should know that it could take multiple trips before they decipher the maze of logging roads and actually walk beneath the towering trees. |
