Newport

Newport Yaquina Bay BridgeNewport is a city on the central Oregon Coast. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868.

It is the home of the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, two lighthouses and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Oregon Coast Aquarium was once the home of the Free Willy star and is consistently rated one of the best aquariums in the country.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a 29 acre facility featuring more than 190 animal species, including seals, otters, sea lions, tufted puffins and a giant octopus. (You can even get kissed by a sea lion) The aquarium also has six acres of cliffs, rocky caves, tidepools and nature trails. You can walk through one of the largest seabird aviaries in North America, or visit the rocky coast exhibit, where sea lions, seals and sea otters splash and play. As well as world class fish tank displays there are hands on displays and interactive computers to help you learn about Oregon's coasts and wetlands.

Historic Nye Beach was established by John Nye, who obtained a160 acre land claim in 1866 when Newport was first opened for settlement. Sam Irvin promoted Nye Beach as a destination resort area in the 1880's. By the early 1900's, L.C. Smith, a Realtor, promoted the area as "The Promised Land." Smith was responsible for many of the wooden boardwalks which linked the Nye Beach oceanfront neighborhood to the bayfront area. Nye Beach and the Bay Front Area are both must stroll areas.

The Newport Bayfront area is home to Oregon's biggest commercial fishing fleet. As you stroll along the Newport Bayfront you will find restaurants, galleries, boat tours, gift shops, candy shops and a lot of fun. Sea lions as well as boats inhabit the many private docks and public piers.

Toledo is just a seven mile drive east of Newport and the only inland coastal community with a deep water channel. The historic town of Toledo is a charming blend of seaside town, river town surrounded by the Oregon Coast range.

The 9th Annual Nye Beach Clambake, Seafood BBQ and Pet Parade
Newport

This Nye Beach event is a family friendly favorite for a 4th of July Holiday at the Oregon Coast.

Nye Beach Clam BakeSince 2003, Annual Nye Beach Clambake, Seafood BBQ and Pet Parade has had a historical theme that recalls the days when Nye Beach was not a part of Newport. Nye Beach was actually a separate village connected only by a muddy, ruddy set of wooden planks.

City-organized clambakes were held in the summer season from the late 1800's until the last one in 1918. Many of the clambakes took place on the beach, with wooden tables loaded with food. Clams were cooked in the sand, inside a fire pit surrounded by rocks and with seaweed thrown in.

Oregon Coast Quests are fun and educational mini adventures
Newport

quest-letter-f-lgQuests are fun, place-based adventures that use clues and hints to encourage you to explore the natural, cultural and historical treasures of Oregon's central coast. Suitable for groups of all ages, Quests allow you to search at your own pace through parks and other public spaces throughout coastal Lincoln County.

The clues are found in the Oregon Coast Quests guidebooks, available at bookstores around the region (including our own HMSC Bookstore). At the end of each self-guided interpretive Quest, participants find a hidden Quest box containing a log-book to sign and a hand-carved stamp to mark their accomplishment. The true "treasure" is the fun of the walk and learning about special places in the community.

Quests are great fun and once you've gone questing, you may even want to help create a new Quest for the next edition of the guide book!

Driftwood on the Oregon Coast

driftwood-BeclectoDriftwood makes me swoon.I know its weird maybe, but it’s me. Plentiful driftwood, like one finds on the beautiful Oregon coast sends me to another dimension.

Driftwood I believe even inspires Mother Nature’s artistic spirit. She takes a raw log, a gnarly root and a bundle of branches or bark, bathes it with waves, polishes it with sand, then turns it out on a beach to let it bask in the sun to provide rich contrasts between light and dark.

Oregon Coast free-range beer in Newport, Oregon
Newport

by Brian Cantwell

Seattle Times ImageIt was a nice capper to earn us our local-foods merit badge: lunch and a beer at the Brewer's on the Bay brew pub, part of the "Rogue Nation World Headquarters," as it says in very large letters outside the home of Rogue Ales on Yaquina Bay in Newport, Ore.

Oregon is a vortex of the craft-brewing world, and the roguish folks who brew Rogue are among the cardinals of that religion. We were nearing the end of our Oregon Coast tour, and this was a nice spot to sit on a barstool with a view of the yacht basin and reflect on the trip...
