Newport

Newport Yaquina Bay BridgeNewport is a city on the central Oregon Coast. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868.

It is the home of the famous Yaquina Bay Bridge, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, two lighthouses and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Oregon Coast Aquarium was once the home of the Free Willy star and is consistently rated one of the best aquariums in the country.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a 29 acre facility featuring more than 190 animal species, including seals, otters, sea lions, tufted puffins and a giant octopus. (You can even get kissed by a sea lion) The aquarium also has six acres of cliffs, rocky caves, tidepools and nature trails. You can walk through one of the largest seabird aviaries in North America, or visit the rocky coast exhibit, where sea lions, seals and sea otters splash and play. As well as world class fish tank displays there are hands on displays and interactive computers to help you learn about Oregon's coasts and wetlands.

Historic Nye Beach was established by John Nye, who obtained a160 acre land claim in 1866 when Newport was first opened for settlement. Sam Irvin promoted Nye Beach as a destination resort area in the 1880's. By the early 1900's, L.C. Smith, a Realtor, promoted the area as "The Promised Land." Smith was responsible for many of the wooden boardwalks which linked the Nye Beach oceanfront neighborhood to the bayfront area. Nye Beach and the Bay Front Area are both must stroll areas.

The Newport Bayfront area is home to Oregon's biggest commercial fishing fleet. As you stroll along the Newport Bayfront you will find restaurants, galleries, boat tours, gift shops, candy shops and a lot of fun. Sea lions as well as boats inhabit the many private docks and public piers.

Toledo is just a seven mile drive east of Newport and the only inland coastal community with a deep water channel. The historic town of Toledo is a charming blend of seaside town, river town surrounded by the Oregon Coast range.

An Unusual Photographs Exhibit Opened at Oregon Coast Aquarium's Passages of the Deep
Newport

parasiteAn exhibit of unusual photographs are displayed in the Oregon Coast Aquarium's Passages of the Deep exhibit. "Sea Unseen" is a collection of photographs taken by fisheries biologist Carla Stehr, whose extraordinary images of Pacific marine life are viewed and photographed through a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Peering into this microscope reveals a realm where unlikely shapes and textures emerge; revealing a fantastic world beyond what is visible to the human eye.

Newport, Oregon: A Bustling RV Friendly Seaport Town
Newport

Oregon's Newport Bustles With the Sights, Smells and Sounds of a Charming Seaport Town

by Bob Difley for MotorHome Magazine

BobDifley1Row after row of brawny fishing trawlers strained against their dock lines, while weary fishermen in knee boots cleaned the decks to rid them of the last evidence of the day’s catch. Crab traps, stuffed with coils of frayed line and scuffed cork floats, were stacked on the dock and in the distance a foghorn moaned as the fog enveloped the ghostly bridge that spanned the harbor entrance.

This is the scene along the harbor in Newport, Oregon — home to the Oregon coast’s largest commercial fishing fleet — where sea-hardened, leathery-skinned fishermen in rugged fishing boats haul in their daily catch.
