Driftwood on the Oregon Coast

driftwood-BeclectoDriftwood makes me swoon.I know its weird maybe, but it’s me. Plentiful driftwood, like one finds on the beautiful Oregon coast sends me to another dimension.

Driftwood I believe even inspires Mother Nature’s artistic spirit. She takes a raw log, a gnarly root and a bundle of branches or bark,bathes it with waves, polishes it with sand, then turns it out on a beach to let it bask in the sun to provide rich contrasts between light and dark.

When I see driftwood, miles of driftwood like one finds along the jetty at Ft Stevens State Park,I think of all the things I’d love to make from it.I’d love to haul a couple of old bleached logs home, along with a couple of old bleached planks and make a sturdy garden bench.Once I had that under my belt, I’d keep hauling and perfecting my designs.I’d look for Cedar and Redwood and turn out masterpieces of driftwood furniture. But alas, I must remain a driftwood artisan in my own mind only.

One thing is good, When we were leaving Newport, Oregon for our mad dash to drop off the Cruise America Coach back in, we stopped and mailed home a big ole box of pieces of driftwood i just couldn’t leave behind.There may have been a few rocks in that box too cuz it sure was expensive to ship it back (80 bucks) Its arrival in Gulfport Florida was like Christmas though, and it is ceremoniously piled on my pub table right this minute, looking beautiful.
