July 1st and 2nd - Two more all-depth days added to central Oregon Coast spring Halibut season
Fishing Reports

Fishery managers added two days to the all-depth sport halibut fishery off the central Oregon coast. Fishing for Pacific halibut will be open July 1 and 2 at all depths.

halibut2-Tradewinds“The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Marine Fisheries and the International Pacific Halibut Commission decided that being open for three days had a high likelihood of exceeding the spring quota, which would come out of the much-smaller summer quota. Based on that, and the fact that the next opening is for the 4th of July holiday weekend, it was decided to only open the fishery on Thursday and Friday (July 1 and 2),” said Lynn Mattes, halibut project leader for ODFW. “If any quota remains after that time, it will be rolled into the quota for the summer fishery, which begins in August.”

Keep young wildlife wild: It’s best for the animals and it’s the law
Fishing Reports

MMI-ElephantSealPupThis is the time of year when Oregon's wildlife are raising their young, teaching them what to eat, where to take shelter, and how to survive in the wild. During this time, parents will temporarily and naturally leave their young to feed elsewhere.

Unfortunately, well-intentioned people sometimes mistake young animals temporarily left by their parents as orphans and remove them from the wild. Doing so reduces the animal's chances at long-term survival in its natural habitat. Last year, of 732 "orphaned" animals admitted to licensed wildlife rehabilitators, 81 died, 15 were euthanized and 65 may never be released back to the wild.

Never assume an animal is orphaned and remove it from the wild without further consultation.

Albacore Tuna Bounty off the Oregon Coast
Fishing Reports

by Kurt Ploetz

TunaOnTheLineOutdoor Chef Kurt is still amazed at the fighting power of these tuna in the blue water off of the Oregon coast. The albacore tuna fishery in Oregon has grown dramatically over the last 5 years, into a great new sporting adventure. There are a series of derbies from south to north in the summers, which attract boats from as far as southern California and all over the west coast.

Charters out of most of the major ports are available for this fine eating fish. With a limit of 25, if you get into them, you can fill the freezer in a short period of time.
