Seaside has been the Oregon Coast's most popular ocean resort since the mid 1800s and is only 90 minutes from Portland, Oregon. The name "Seaside" came from a summer resort built by the railroad magnate Ben Holladay in the 1870s, Seaside House, located a mile south of the business center.
There is an annual volleyball tournament held every August that draws thousands of competitors and participants. Seaside is the destination for the Hood to Coast relay race and Portland-to-Coast relay walk, which also take place in August. The Seaside Three-Course Challenge, a cross country race, is also held at Fort Rilea, near Seaside, every fall, and is hosted by Seaside High School.
Every spring, Seaside hosts the Dorchester Conference, a convention of the Oregon Republican Party. This convention was founded in 1964, by then-state representative Bob Packwood as a forum for liberal Republicans, but within the next few years it attracted interest from other Republicans, and in the 1990s was dominated by members of the conservative branch of the party. Over the years the conference has attracted visits from presidential candidates, debates between Republican primary candidates, and discussions of wider political and social issues.
Seaside is home to the Seaside Aquarium a short walk from the Lewis & Clark monument.
The Miss Oregon Pageant, the official state finals to Miss America takes place annually at the Seaside Civic Center.
At the end of Broadway, Seaside's main street, lies "The Turnaround". It is a roundabout designed to turn traffic around when the street dead ends at the Pacific Ocean. In the middle of "The Turnaround" stands a statue of Lewis and Clark. The statue signifies that not only tourists "turn around" in Seaside, but that Lewis and Clark turned again for home, and their report to fellow Albemarle, Virginia resident Thomas Jefferson, when they reached the Pacific Ocean. "The Turnaround" is also one end of Seaside's 1.5-mile long ocean front Promenade is perfect for strollers, joggers and bike riders.

Twenty years ago artist Carol Riley made her first trip to Paris, France. Inspired by the experience, she has returned almost every year and now Paris is the inspiration for her new show "PARIS LIGHTS" opening at The Gallery @ Yummy wine bar and bistro.
"I painted 'PARIS LIGHTS' simply because like so many others, I am in love with the city and have spent a lot of time there," said the artist of her show. "I appreciate the juxtaposition of the very old and even ancient with surprising contemporary design. I admire the care given to the beautiful presentation of even the small details such as the way the cakes are arranged in the window of a patisserie". The painting "Paris Lights" from which her show garners its title pays homage to the exquisite Parisian desserts in just such a patisserie. The result is a delightful mosaic of vibrant color.

Day 2 of our Oregon Coast trip was going to be fun we just knew it. Seaside Oregon was our destination for shopping and a little Florida type tourist interaction. We’d made big plans the night before the walk from the jetty to the iron skeleton of the shipwreck on the beach at Ft Stevens State Park. In the interest of time and wanting to move on down the road we drove to the Beach Access by the shipwreck instead. The only other vehicle in the sandy lot was another Cruise America coach.
