Huge waves, warm weather and the beaches of Australia, California, South Africa and South America. That is the typical imagery for surfing, a sport that conjures up thoughts of summer days and the music of the Beach Boys.
But don’t think that surfing is just for warm weather beach-goers. In fact, the University has the largest surf club in the entire Northwest.
The club, which was started in 1995 by Bryan Bates, a legend in the Oregon surf community and a renowned surfboard crafter, is still running strong today with more than 30 members. For the past three years, senior Matt Hundhammer has run the club as the coordinator for all things Oregon Surf.
“Surfing is an outlet for us; for me personally, it has been the outlet that has allowed me to stay at UO,” Hundhammer said.

For the typical Northwest surfer, a “normal” winter such as this one can be pretty hard to endure. Opportunities for quality surf have been few compared to some memorable, unusual winters. So what’s a frustrated surfer to do?
Travel. It’s a popular antidote to short, rainy, onshore days, and 5 mm Neoprene.
For most of us, just the idea of warm water, coral reefs, palm trees and tropical wax is enough to awaken the wanderlust. What’s tropical wax?

Surfer Eric Akiskalian & Salem-News.com photographer Tim King are in the running for Billabong's Ride of the Year.

"Probably the biggest wave I have ever seen ridden in Oregon" -Garrett 'G-Mac' McNamara
(SOUTH REEF, Ore,) - Footage of a California big wave surfer riding a gigantic Oregon reef wave last October has been nominated in the Ride of the Year Category for The 10th Annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
I shot the footage of Camarillo, California Eric Akiskalian last October during the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Classic that is held each year by Oregon surfers John Forse and Adam Wagner. Eric and his tow-in partner Keith Galbraith were towsurfing giant waves at South Reef, adjacent to the contest location the entire afternoon and they were riding some of the biggest waves ever ridden along Oregon’s coast.

You may have heard some reference to this winter as being affected by the “El Niño”. So, just what is that? And how does it affect surfing in Oregon?
The term “El Niño” is used to describe one of several large-scale oscillations in ocean surface water temperature and atmospheric pressure that occur naturally around the earth. It is characterized by unseasonably warm temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, currently running about 1-3°C above normal.

Each Seven Surfboard is made completely by hand by myself, Bryan Bates. I am a native Oregonian and very proud to live and surf here. I've been incredibly fortunate in being able to learn the trade of surfboard building from some true masters up here in the Northwest. Guys like Cort Gion, Mike Tuel, and Dana Williams have passed on to me an amazing wealth of knowledge.
